EXPLORING BEARS*

Meeting point: Schiller Monument on Schiller Square

The heart of Stuttgart – dealing with the reconstruction of historic buildings in the city center after the war.

We visit the Stiftskirche, Schillerplatz and Schlossplatz with their historic buildings, as well as the two castles. Using these examples, ArchitecTour guide Dirk shows how differently the reconstruction of the historic building fabric was handled after the war. On the one hand, there were 1:1 reconstructions, such as the facades of the New Castle and the Renaissance buildings at Schillerplatz; on the other hand, the reconstructions of the Old Castle and the Stiftskirche were not 1:1 reconstructions, but the architects of the reconstruction were given the freedom to incorporate their own modern design elements. We also visit the interior of the Stiftskirche, whose interior was remodeled again after the reconstruction.
